The sequel to the 2001 and 2002 version of Stronghold was released in April 2005. The game engine was enhanced to provide full 3-dimensional graphics. Other changes include new military and peace campaigns and the addition of crime and punishment which allows players to torture unruly peasants. This is the first complete overhaul of the franchise since the first Stronghold appeared on shelves in 2001. It also includes many new characters.

Players battle various types of aliens on foot or in vehicles as they attempt to uncover the secrets of the Halo. The game has been called “easy to learn,” and has been praised for its “engaging story”.
Widely considered to be one of the best, and most influential, first-person shooters on a game console, Halo’s acclaim rivals that of GoldenEye 007 and Half-Life. For example, Edge gave Halo a full score of ten out of ten, only the fourth such designation in the magazine’s 12-year history. Nevertheless, Halo has its critics. The game was tenth on GameSpy’s “Top 25 Most Overrated Games of All Time”; one reviewer stated that the game “recycl[ed] the same areas over and over until you were bored to tears.”

Civilization IV is a turn-based game in which the player builds an empire from scratch. All standard full-length games begin in 4000 BC with (a settler that builds) a single city; from there, the player expands the empire while contending with rival nations, utilizing the geography, developing infrastructure, and encouraging scientific cultural progress. Silent Assassin addressed many of the criticisms concerning the gameplay of the original game: The control scheme has been streamlined to better mirror that of a standard shooter; an optional first-person perspective was added; and a visual meter was added to give the player the ability to gauge enemies’ suspicion level for stealth purposes. While the “suspicion meter” generally reacts appropriately (such as when the player enters a restricted area or draws a weapon in public), there were some sensitivity issues, possibly bug-related, which causes enemies to react adversely to the player for seemingly innocuous actions, such as running indoors or close proximity. This feature was improved upon in the subsequent games of the series.Also introduced in the game was the concept of a post-mission ranking system, in which the player is given a status based on how they completed the mission, rated along a stealthy-aggressive axis, between “Mass Murderer”, a non-stealthy player who kills everyone, and “Silent Assassin”, a stealthy player who manages to complete the level without being noticed and only killing the intended target. The game rewards the player for critical thinking and problem solving, encouraging the player not to treat the game as a simple shooter; achieving Silent Assassin status rewards the player with bonus weapons (silenced Silverballers and a concealable sawn-off shotgun after the first two times; an M4 carbine for completing all the Russian missions with the ranking).

Stronghold: Crusader is a standalone expansion of Firefly Studios’s 2001 game Stronghold; Firefly’s first Stronghold is not required to play Stronghold: Crusader.
