S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is set in 2012, six years after a fictional second meltdown at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Now under strict quarantine, the zone is patrolled by "stalkers" - mercenaries who collecting strange artifacts and other materials for various scientists and corporations. You play a stalker known simply as the "marked one," and start the game on the outskirts of the zone with little memory of your past.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s gameplay also deviates from the traditional FPS combat we've become accustomed to in recent years in many areas. Relying on your mini-map, you'll track down mission objectives and often get into open-ended firefights with enemies methodically hunting you down from varying directions. Your character has an RPG-inspired inventory system, which means you'll find yourself constantly scrounging dead bodies for medkits, ammo and other supplies. As you progress through the game, you get access to vastly improved weapons, which in a way allows you to level up your character as you progress through the game. Combat feels fairly solid, although the early missions can be somewhat frustrating when you're saddled with weaker weapons.
